Historic Libraries Forum
Aimed at those with no background knowledge of binding history or identification. The first session, led by Ed Potten, will look at identifying, localizing and dating bindings based on their characteristics, and at some of the reference sources available which can help. The second session, led by Caroline Checkley-Scott, will look at identifying and prioritizing bindings for preservation or conservation, and at what immediate remedial work can be done on a tight budget to stabilize and care for at-risk bindings. The afternoon session will include a tour of the Conservation Studio. This is a “hands-on” course, so places are extremely limited.

Event: From the Iron Curtain to the electronic fence . The Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street, London EC1, 8 July 2008

CILIP in London
The social sciences are broad-ranging; social scientists have unique information needs. The International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) is a key information resource covering all the main social science disciplines, with exceptionally high non-English language content, as well as much material from developing countries. It is also a valuable route to information on current issues - from the credit crunch, Chinese democracy and fuel prices to how eating habits can predict babies' gender! Rebecca will explore the route IBSS has taken from its idealistic origins in Paris to its current position as one of the world's most dynamic online databases, with its own blog. She will give her insider's view on the role and place of IBSS in the wider information environment, and highlight the opportunities and challenges facing the database in the Google Age.Rebecca Ursell has been IBSS Manager since 2005, having previously been responsible for Russian and Slavic materials. She has also been a bookshop manager. Rebecca has a master's degree from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies. This talk will be of particular value to anyone registered for CILIP Chartership and can contribute towards CPD requirements. CILIP in London evening meetings are free and open to all with a professional interest in the topic. Refreshments will be available afterwards. As space is limited, please let us know if you are coming: contact cilip@london.com. It would be helpful to tell us how you found out about the event. We do our best to ensure that events take place as advertised, but regret we cannot take responsibility for changes or cancellations due to circumstances beyond our control.
