Defining our professional future

Defining our professional future is about the future of CILIP and the knowledge and information sector

In 2012 CILIP will be ten years old. In 2018 the library and information profession will have had Chartered status for 120 years.

Between April and June 2010 CILIP held a conversation about the future of the organisation and sector. More than 3,500 members and non-members contributed through social media, an online survey and focus groups.

Conversation report

Vision and mission

The report provided clear and consistent messages about the future for the sector and CILIP. The report has been used by Trustees to create a new vision and mission for CILIP. The vision and mission will set CILIP's strategic direction and be at the heart of all CILIP's activities.

VISION

A fair and economically prosperous society is underpinned by literacy, access to information and the transfer of knowledge.

MISSION

CILIP exists to:

  • Promote and support the people who work to deliver this vision.
  • Be the leading voice for information, library and knowledge practitioners, working to advocate strongly, provide unity through shared values and develop skills and excellence.

The programme

The Defining our Professional Future programme is made up of four projects:

  • The conversation
  • The vision and mission
  • The roadmap
  • Implementation

Trustees agreed the roadmap at the March 2011 Council meeting. CILIP's new organisational structure will be published in June CILIP Update with an explanation about what this will mean for the future.

Tasks for the Project Board:

  • Steer the programme of work
  • Appoint the consultancy
