CILIP's external linking policy

Incoming links

CILIP permits anyone to link to CILIP's website www.cilip.org.uk subject to the linker's compliance with the following terms and conditions:
the linker

  • must not create a border environment around content contained in CILIP's site;
  • must not use CILIP's logos without prior written permission from CILIP.

CILIP may change the address of web pages without prior notice. CILIP is happy to provide advice as to a suitable page to which to link. Please contact web@cilip.org.uk for further information.

Outgoing links

CILIP will not seek permission for linking to external websites. "Deep linking" is a term used by some to describe the practice of providing links to interior pages within a website. Linking (whether deep linking or not) should not create legal problems unless there are specific circumstances (e.g. “passing off” by the use of frames, or the systematic linking to significant amounts of information on a single website).

CILIP should not hesitate to provide its users with links to online resources. In effect, "linking" their patrons with information resources is a key element of a information professional’s job, whether this occurs in an online environment or not.

Links from the CILIP website are only made to sites that provide information relevant to CILIP and the library and information profession. Links are typically only made to not-for-profit (e.g. government, educational, etc.) websites. CILIP does not link to personal websites or websites selling products or services, with the exception of sponsors, exhibitors at CILIP conferences, and advertisers in the Buyers’ Guide supplement to Library + Information Gazette.

Reciprocal links are frequently not granted due to the volume of requests CILIP receives and the need to conform to the criteria given above.
