1 April 2002 – CILIP is launched at a celebration party for CILIP activists and guests at Shakespeare’s Under Globe in London.

20 June 2002 – CILIP’s first promotional campaign, Frontiers: science in libraries, organised as part of the Government’s Science Year, achieves national television and radio coverage for its dream lab experiment on reading and dreaming. 10,000 people take part.

3 July 2002 – Patricia Hewitt (then Secretary of State for Trade and Industry) addresses a special reception at the House of Commons organised by CILIP to celebrate excellence in the knowledge economy.

26 September 2002The Reading Agency is launched with substantial financial support from CILIP.

16 October 2002 – CILIP publishes Start with the Child – a radical new vision exploring the future of libraries for children and young people.

24 October 2002 – CILIP opens a new information centre for members, kitted out by Instant Library.

1 November 2002 – The CILIP Gala Awards ceremony brings together the award presentations for the Public Relations & Publicity Awards, the Robinson Medal, The Jason Farradane Award, the Tony Kent Strix Award and the Reference Awards at a Gala event at the Landmark Hotel in London.

12 November 2002 – CILIP published the CILIP in the Knowledge Economy report, which sets out a strategy for CILIP to meet the challenge of the changing information landscape.

6 December 2002 – the first CILIP / Online Personal Development Award is presented to Jas Sembhi, senior information officer at leading London law firm D J Freeman at the glittering Information Industry Awards.
