CILIP works for the public good to promote education and knowledge through the establishment and development of library and information services and the advancement of librarianship and information science.

Every year CILIP invites nominations for Honorary Fellowship (Hon.FCLIP). This award is made by Council to recognise distinguished service in promoting the purpose and objects of CILIP as laid out in CILIP's Royal Charter.

There are many ways in which colleagues both within and beyond the CILIP community might render such distinguished service:

1. by supporting and enabling the development of high quality library and information services
2. by promoting and enabling professional development and high standards of professional practice
3. by fostering education, training, research and innovation in the practice of librarianship and information science
4. by enhancing the knowledge base of the profession; by furthering relevant legislation
5. by promoting and demonstrating the ethics and values of the library and information profession
6. by working with colleagues in the UK or overseas to promote and support the provision or development of library and information services
7. by acting as an effective advocate for the library and information profession and library and information services
8. by meritorious service to CILIP or the Branches and Groups of the Institute.

Nominees are normally expected to meet at least two of these criteria.

Nominations – which must be made without the nominee’s knowledge - are now invited for the 2008 round of Honorary Fellowships of CILIP. Nominations may be made by current individual members of CILIP or by any of the Branches and Groups of CILIP or any of the Committees, Boards and Panels of CILIP. Individual members can make only one nomination in each annual round. Nominees may fall into any of the following categories:- colleagues from the library and information community in the UK who are distinguished beyond Fellowship level (although nominees do not necessarily already have to be Fellows); colleagues from the library and information community working outside the UK but with a UK connection; colleagues from the library and information community of international distinction but no particular UK connection; colleagues from outside the library and information community who have given distinguished support to the library and information community. Please note that nominations are made in confidence and are considered in confidence by the Honorary Awards Panel and the Council.

Nominations must provide explicit evidence of achievement which is linked clearly in the submission to the stated criteria. Nominations will be considered by the Honorary Awards Panel solely on the contents of the submission received.

Nomination forms are available from the Chief Executive's Office or on the CILIP website. Or nominations may be submitted online.

Completed nominations must be returned by 1 June 2008.

The Honorary Awards Panel will then meet to review nominations, and the Panel's recommendations will be considered by Council on 24 July. The members of the Panel are Keith Wilson (Chair of the CILIP Chartership Board) who chairs the Panel, Bruce Madge (CILIP President 2008), Kath Owen (Vice-Chair of CILIP Chartership Board) and myself.

All correspondence concerning Honorary Awards should be directed to the Chief Executive's Office and not directly to the Panel members.
