The CILIP / Emerald Public Relations & Publicity Awards are announced and presented today, at a Gala ceremony held at the Landmark Hotel in London. Martin Bell, former Foreign Correspondent and Independent MP for Tatton, is the special guest speaker.

The aim of the Inspiration Campaign was to promote the new improved library website to students during freshers’ week. Stickers with the web address and the image were distributed along with free apples for students at the Freshers’ Fair. The campaign was very successful - library staff spoke to over 500 potential customers in a matter of hours, and they received thousands of hits on the website. The total campaign cost just under £400, and was co-ordinated by the library’s Marketing Group.

Category 4: Award for Multi-Media Publicity Material

Winner: THE CHARLES BOOTH ONLINE ARCHIVE
http://booth.lse.ac.uk/ The Library, London School of Economics and Political Science
Contact: Sue Donnelly on 0207 955 7223 Email: s.donnelly@lse.ac.uk

Charles Booth was a Victorian who led a survey into life and labour in London from 1886-1903. He created London Maps on which he colour-coded streets according to social status. Careful market research and project management has provided the base for a comprehensive, high quality website. Serious researchers and those with a new interest in family history have recorded their delight in the site. It also has the advantage of reducing research time; preventing the wear and tear of a valuable archive and making a rich collection accessible to a worldwide audience. The library has also produced attractive publicity to promote the website, archive and enhance their profile.

The site is set up for different age-groups E-Claire for girls, The Lads and Girls with Attitude. It is easy to use and does away with library and education speak, replacing it with friendly vocabulary such as homework help and informaniacs (a new term for librarians!). The Tom Farries Award for Personal PR Achievement Winner: Julie Spencer, Senior Children’s and Schools Librarian, Bolton Libraries
Contact: Ken Beevers Tel: 01204 332340 Email: ken.beevers@bolton.gov.uk

Julie Spencer's career spans over twenty years, working in Nottinghamshire and in the North West. During this time she has taken an innovative approach to encouraging people to read. She has played a leading role in the first North West Libraries Regional initiative - it is now a vibrant consortium of twenty one libraries. This has been the inspiration for other authorities throughout the UK to develop similar programmes. Julie was a key player in securing £200,000 of Wolfson funding to create a reader development project. She is now the regional coordinator of this project that encourages socially excluded 16 - 25 year olds to read through the medium of ICT.

Amongst her other achievements is the organization and delivery of the 'Everybody's Reading Conference' in 2002; the construction of a related website to cascade good practice and the provision of high quality promotional material. Julie Spencer has harnessed her wide experience in mounting these campaigns. This combined with initiative, enthusiasm and a great deal of energy are what make her such a worthy winner of the Tom Farries Personal PR Achievement Award.
