Ethics Website launched by CILIP
Margaret Watson, Chair of CILIP's Ethics Panel, today launched CILIP's new Ethics Website at the Umbrella 2007 Conference.
"I am really excited to formally launch this website. It has been a long-held dream to be able to provide a resource such as this, designed to help library and information professionals become reflective practitioners and consider the values that underpin their work".
CILIP commissioned Jonathan Gordon-Till and Sylvia Simmons, co-founders of InfoEthics.org.uk, to develop the website. It includes details of CILIP's Ethics Panel and links to internet resources on information ethics. The site features an extensive database of case studies, fully indexed, spanning the broad spectrum of the library and information community. "We have started an ethics blog" said Jonathan, "and we are keen for CILIP members to contribute to the discussion". "We also invite members to share their experience of information ethics by contacting us with details of issues they have faced" added Sylvia. "We are confident that the website will bring ethical considerations to the centre of library and information work and bring to life CILIP's Ethical Principles and Code of Professional Practice".
"Every CILIP member will face ethical problems in their career" continued Margaret Watson, "and there will rarely be a simple right or wrong answer. More often we operate in grey areas, balancing competing ethical principles and trying to find the best solution. This website will guide members through the maze of ethical problems they face and help them understand how the Ethical Principles and Code of Professional Practice are relevant to every aspect of their work."
The CILIP Ethics Website will continue to be developed by www.InfoEthics.org.uk in collaboration with CILIP. It is a key element in CILIP's portfolio of resources to support members in their professional life. CILIP members can also seek confidential guidance on resolving ethical dilemmas via the helpline. This new service can be accessed through the website as well as via the CILIP office at Ridgmount Street.
