CILIP's Policy Forum meets for first time.

Just over 50 people assembled at the Ibis Hotel, Birmingham on 19 March 2008 for the first meeting of CILIP's new Policy Forum. They included members appointed by the Home Nations, English Branches, Special Interest Groups, the National Committee of Affiliated Members and the Retired Members' Guild as well as a number of Councillors and staff. The Forum brings together all parts of CILIP to look at the overall mission and direction of CILIP, long-term policy planning and the Institute's position on professional issues. Participants were welcomed by Peter Griffiths who, as Vice-President, is also Chair of the Policy Forum. The day was facilitated by Rodger O'Connell from LEVELheaded. Members spent most of their time engaged in table group discussions, interspersed with a few plenary sessions and a short business meeting.

Policy Forum meeting, 19 March 2008

During the day Members focused on what would make the Policy Forum successful and identified a number of key issues that the Forum needed to consider. In the afternoon the Policy Forum discussed the proposition that professionalism in LIS was being undermined and considered how CILIP should address this problem. The business meeting agreed to recommend a general statement on Libraries and Learning to Council for adoption as CILIP policy. Further more detailed reports of the Policy Forum will be posted later and there will be coverage of the meeting in Update.
