Further information about the four recipients and the reasons they have received Honorary Fellowships:

Saad Eskander was appointed Director-General of the Iraq National Library and Archive (INLA) in November 2003 at a time when fire, looting and the actions of the previous regime had left the INLA as the most damaged cultural institution in Iraq.
Dr Eskander has succeeded in restoring the INLA to a semblance of professional normality while operating under conditions of unimaginable difficulty.
He is honoured by CILIP for: promoting and enabling professional development and high standards of professional practice; promoting and demonstrating the ethics and values of the library and information profession; and acting as an effective advocate for the library and information profession and library and information services.

Carla J Funk has been Executive Director of the Medical Library Association (MLA) since 1992. MLA has its headquarters in Chicago, Illinois, and is a not-for-profit educational association serving 5,000 individuals and institutions in the health services information field.
The MLA has gone from strength to strength under Carla Funk’s leadership, and her work has also helped the development of medical librarianship in the UK and internationally. She also found time to act as an adviser to CILIP’s Governance Review Task Force, contributing to the thinking which has led to the radical reshaping of CILIP governance.
She is honoured by CILIP for: working with colleagues in the UK and overseas to promote and support the provision and development of library and information services; acting as an effective advocate for the library and information profession and library and information services; and providing meritorious service to CILIP.

Councillor Bob Janes has held Derbyshire’s Culture portfolio since 2001. Despite the breadth and scope of the portfolio he has shown an unrivalled grasp of all its elements and has a particular knowledge and understanding of public library service.
Under Councillor Janes’ political leadership, Derbyshire Libraries have achieved an “excellent” four-star rating with the County Council investing significantly in service provision and also in library buildings.
Councillor Janes is honoured by CILIP for: supporting and enabling the development of high quality library and information services; promoting and enabling professional development and high standards of professional practice; and acting as an effective advocate for the library and information profession and library and information services.

Margaret Oldroyd has been active in human resource management and staff development for many years both in her own institution, De Montfort University, and in the library and information profession through her work for SCONUL (the Society of College National and University Libraries) and for CILIP and its predecessor body, the Library Association.
She held office on a number of LA committees and boards in the 1980s and 1990s, including long service as an Officer of the COFHE (Colleges of Further and Higher Education) Special Interest Group. Having supported the framework of qualifications as a scrutineer and regional assessor from 1980 to 1995, Margaret became a member of the Chartership Board in 1995 and Chair of the Chartership Board in 2003, serving in that capacity until 2007. In that role, Margaret was also instrumental in the work of developing CILIP’s current framework of qualifications and accreditation.
She is honoured by CILIP for: promoting and enabling professional development and high standards of professional practice; increasing the knowledge base of the profession; and providing meritorious service to CILIP and to its Branches and Groups.
