Biography

Chris Armstrong is Managing Director of Information Automation Limited (IAL), a consultancy, research and training company in the library and information sector, which was established in 1987. Chris’s work focuses on electronic information resources, and their effective use in libraries and information centres. In recent years, e-books have been the subject of much of the company’s research work, and it is currently a partner in the JISC National e-Book Observatory being run by UCL. Chris and colleague, Ray Lonsdale, jointly run a regular series of training courses, modstly focussing on the Management of e-Book Collections in Libraries, and Collection Development Policies for e-Resources. The latter is also the subject of a year-long project working with 30 librarians in sub-Saharan Africa, funded by the Carnegie Foundation.

Chris has been associated with the Department of Information Studies in Aberystwyth University for some 30 years and has been Director of its International Graduate Summer School and module coordinator for courses on electronic publishing, as well as offering occasional lectures and short courses on e-resources, e-publishing and web-site design.

Chris publishes, and speaks at conferences regularly; he is the editor of Facet’s Staying Legal (2004) and his latest article is on e-books and will appear in JOLIS early in 2008. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Analysts and Programmers, as well as of CILIP.

He is also the proud father of two married sons (and one he can’t quite get rid of (!) but who may be excused as he is in his final year at University), and – just – a proud grandfather! His principal sports are badminton, table tennis and walking; hobbies include gardening, sailing and music (that’s right – can’t play a note!).
