Biography
I work as Business Intelligence Manager at Business Link London, a free service available to anyone starting up or running a small or medium sized business, providing information and practical advice to help business people tackle their challenges directly or with further expert assistance.
I am responsible for market intelligence, customer research and knowledge management and I run an almost completely paperless information unit with seven staff. Over the last five years we have transformed ourselves from being a simple enquiry service into being at the heart of the strategic planning function of the business, and in December 2004, my team won the Best Information or Knowledge Team in a Business Environment at the Information Industry Awards.
I started my library career, like many others, as a Saturday girl in the local public library and did the old two year diploma course followed by a degree in economics. At that point I became a librarian in a number of academic institutions before moving into market intelligence at, among others, Unilever and Parcelforce, where I started the first market intelligence function.
I then had a complete career change and moved into marketing. After acting as direct marketing manager for Parcelforce I became Head of Marketing at the London East Training & Enterprise Council.
But I decided that I wanted to be my own boss, and moved back into market intelligence which I loved. For six years before joining Business Link, I ran my own market intelligence consultancy. This has given me good understanding of the issues faced by the small businesses we serve.
I live in north London with my husband, and I’m afraid I’m one of the many belly dancing librarians.
