Biography

Candidate manifesto - max 300 words
I have been a Chartered member of the Library Association and CILIP since 1981, and have played an active part in the profession over that quarter century. I have been inspired by the efforts CILIP has been making to become a vibrant modern organisation leading our profession, on a strong financial footing.

I want to be a Trustee because I believe that

1. Modern society and business depends enormously more on information than it has before, in ways that are more visible to all

2. In this information revolution there is a proud and valuable place for us as librarians and Information Professionals to provide leadership and insights in the workplace and society and national policy. We must make sure that the benefits we can bring are well developed and cannot be overlooked by the worlds we operate in.

3. We need an effective professional body to lead us in this work, creating effective policies and speaking powerfully for our value to society and the economy

4. I want to help CILIP continue becoming the imaginative and effective body we need and that it now has the opportunity to become.

If elected I will work for the profession and members to ensure that both CILIP and the world outside the organisation do not miss the opportunities we have to benefit our society, our economy and ourselves.

I know Dion through his participation in the UKeiG Intranets Forum. Dion has actively supported the Forum since it started in 2006, being a strong advocate for the networking benefits the forum provides.

This is illustrated by his work to investigate the need for a virtual forum for Forum members. Dion worked with the UKeiG committee, devising a survey, and collating and presenting the findings. The outcome has been the setting up of a new Discussion List for UkeiG members with an interest in intranets.

Dion's help and feedback has been invaluable for the growth of the Forum.

I have known Dion professionally for 20 years from the when he joined Department of Health, after previous posts held in the Ministry of Agriculture and the Cabinet Office. At Health he was initially employed as a Librarian, then Senior Librarian. He left to take up a post at The Motor Neurone Disease Association and now works as a freelance consultant.

From his experience Dion would bring considerable professional expertise to the position and his experiences as a consultant give him a different perspective on Information and Know ledge Management which would broaden the overall perception of the Trustees.

I nominate Dion Lindsay as CILIP trustee. Dion continues to make a great contribution to the profession by supporting others and being a major contributor to the launch and success of the CILIP communities. He brings fresh thought to the debate about the future of the profession, and works hard to contribute to the development of those ideas.

Dion is an exemplary advocate for our profession.

I first got to know Dion through CILIP Communities, where his postings have been both insightful and thought-provoking. His forward-thinking views of the information profession are reasoned and measured and he has an enviable ability to express these with impact.

There is no doubt that CILIP and the information profession will gain a lot from Dion Lindsay being elected onto the reformed Council and I have no hesitation in nominating him either as a trustee - or as Vice-president.

I have known Dion Lindsay as a colleague and committed professional since 1994.

He has been an astute discerner of likely future directions for the profession and a firm advocate of these.

As a practitioner, he is diligent and industrious. He knows how to use delegation, with an appropriate mentoring role, to empower colleagues to take responsibility for their work and personal development. He uses successfully his listening and participative skills in discussion. His perceptive advice and support have been frequently invaluable to me.

His experience in the charity sector will be invaluable as a CILIP trustee.
