What future for public libraries in the age of austerity?

Assessing and responding to the impact of the coalition Government’s cost-cutting strategy on public library services is top of the agenda for senior managers and elected members. In this year's programme, Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture, Communications and the Creative Industries will give a political perspective on the future of public libraries.

This year’s conference will once again provide a unique opportunity for in-depth discussion and debate. Key issues include:

• How will spending cuts impact on local government and library services?
• What role is there for libraries in The Big Society?
• Can alternative governance, outsourcing, and shared services provide viable options?
• How can local people help to deliver library services?

More than 25 expert speakers will participate in discussion and debate, and delegates will benefit from roundtables, networking opportunities, social events, and visiting inspiring new libraries.

The programme includes a councillor session led by John Hicks on alternative models of service delivery and governance, with an opportunity to learn about the range of shared service projects. There will also be examples of innovation and transformation from the private sector and practical sessions on customer involvement, consultation and interaction.

Attending PLA 2010 is also a great opportunity to visit Leeds, the cultural and economic heart of West Yorkshire, famous for its football, festivals, shopping and higher education.
