Strength in numbers: Going local, global, and mobile with Dewey

Libraries are sitting on an untapped goldmine in their collections: the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) numbers associated with local content. Key question is how can this data be exploited to improve access and reduce costs through cooperation and standardisation?

Interest in finding solutions has been intensified by the publication in mid-2011 of the 23rd edition of the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) system both in print and online. Together with the recent availability of parts of the system as linked data, it will serve as a springboard to examine Dewey’s value proposition as a knowledge organisation scheme.

DCC numbers are associated with physical and digital content in collections around the world, with MARCXML-coded content in current DDC translations, and with terminology sets in English and a host of other languages. The system can therefore uniquely address local, global, mobile, and semantic web challenges and opportunities.

CILIP’s fourth annual Executive Briefing with OCLC will address the exciting opportunities DCC offers through case studies, panel discussions, and presentations by expert speakers drawn from across the global information community. An indication of the exceptional quality of these joint Briefings is the 92% Good to Excellent rating given by delegates to the 2010 event titled Becoming Upwardly Mobile – can libraries rise to the challenge?
