International Activities
CILIP (the Chartered Institute of Library and Informational Professionals) is the Membership body for library and information professionals in the UK. It was formed in April 2002 by the merger of the Library Association (LA) and the Institute of Information Scientists (IIS). CILIP in London was created from part of the LA’s London and Home Counties Branch (LHCB) and the Southern Branch of the IIS. LHCB had a well established history of international activities; CILIP in London is committed to continuing this programme and in expanding it to new countries.
Building on past activities – organised through collaboration with government agencies, professional bodies, libraries and cultural institutes in England and abroad – CILIP in London is continuing a successful exchange programme that includes visits to our region for individual library and information workers from abroad.
A modest
bursary
scheme has been set up with the new European Union countries to help approved applicants with a contribution towards costs: applicants are asked to state their professional interests and make their own travel and accommodation arrangements. A new country is selected each year by CILIP in London committee members and publicity is through professional bodies and journals. We make no charge for helping with such visits.
While CILIP's International Office deals with other countries at a strategic level, CILIP in London concentrates on individual programmes, professional visits, exchanges and small conferences.
