From the Iron Curtain to the electronic fence

Date: Tuesday 8 July 2008
Time: 6.30pm
Venue: The Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street, London EC1

Speaker: Rebecca Ursell, IBSS Manager

The social sciences are broad-ranging; social scientists have unique information needs.

The International Bibliography of the Social Sciences (IBSS) is a key information resource covering all the main social science disciplines, with exceptionally high non-English language content, as well as much material from developing countries. It is also a valuable route to information on current issues - from the credit crunch, Chinese democracy and fuel prices to how eating habits can predict babies' gender!

Rebecca will explore the route IBSS has taken from its idealistic origins in Paris to its current position as one of the world's most dynamic online databases, with its own blog. She will give her insider's view on the role and place of IBSS in the wider information environment, and highlight the opportunities and challenges facing the database in the Google Age.

Rebecca Ursell has been IBSS Manager since 2005, having previously been responsible for Russian and Slavic materials. She has also been a bookshop manager. Rebecca has a master's degree from the School of Slavonic and East European Studies.
