CILIP's policy statement on preservation and conservation.
CILIP vigorously promotes awareness of issues relating to the preservation, conservation, security and heritage of all print and non-print materials throughout the UK in libraries, archives and information centres.
To that end CILIP:
Promotes national responsibility for preservation, conservation, security and heritage matters through Parliament and through public awareness
- encourages the inclusion of education in preservation and conservation in all professional courses, and through its own continuing education programme
- encourages co-operative preservation policies
- reviews and promotes, through its Panel on Preservation and Conservation, the progress of such policies and their national implementation
- co-operates with library and information professionals, archivists, conservators, curators and records managers to raise preservation awareness
- encourages the development of preservation, conservation, security and heritage initiatives
- encourages optimum and co-operative cross-sectoral use of resources
- recommends co-ordinated collection development
- advises members and library and information centres on the implementation of all such policies
CILIP fully supports:
- the general remit of the National Preservation Office
- the development of the highest preservation and conservation standards in public and private sectors
- regional co-operative schemes
- the central provision of advice on emergency response plans
- the work of the UKIRB (United Kingdom and Ireland Blue Shield) organisation, particularly as a focal point for local, regional, national and international initiatives promoting awareness of risks to cultural heritage objects, and in establishing a pool of expertise to assist with disasters both in the UK and Ireland.
