A day of action on the 5th February 2011
CILIP supported Save Our Libraries Day, a day of action to bring greater attention to the cuts and closures facing many public libraries.
Read-ins, author talks, storytelling sessions, campaigning and mass book borrowing took place across the country on Saturday 5 February 2011. And CILIP met to draw up a set of actions for the Secretary of State for Culture, Jeremy Hunt.
Following on from the success of Save our Libraries Day 2011, National Libraries Day has been launched.
A group of leading literacy, reading, library and education organisations met at CILIP on 26 May 2011 and agreed to support the day, which will be in early February 2012.
"We are delighted to launch National Libraries Day, a week of events in early February leading to a day of celebration of reading, libraries and librarians around the United Kingdom. We want people to go to their local school or public library and use their School Library Service. Use it. Join it. Love it." Alan Gibbons, library campaigner.
