In 2012 CILIP will be ten years old. In 2018 the library and information profession will have had Chartered status for 120 years.
Between April and June 2010 a conversation took place with anyone interested in the knowledge and information domain. See the programme timetable for more details about Defining our professional future.
Report and presentation available
The report of the Defining our professional future project was considered and accepted by CILIP Council on 15 July. The report and the PowerPoint presentation made to Council are now available:

More than 3,500 people were involved in the research in a variety of ways: interviews, focus groups, meetings, the online survey, and comments made on social networking sites. The research provides Council with a set of clear and consistent messages about the future for the knowledge and information sector and for CILIP.
Anonymised data files from the survey are available on request. Contact desiree.chapman@cilip.org.uk to request the data.
Council will use the information contained in the report to develop a vision and roadmap for CILIP in the future. CILIP President Biddy Fisher has been asked to convene a working group to take this work forward ready for Council to consider in September.
The programme
The conversation is a project within a larger programme. This programme aims to define our professional future. Four projects make up the programme:
The Conversation
The Conversation will surface and consider issues. Conclusions from the issues will be reported to CILIP Council.
The Vision
CILIP Council will synthesise issues from the conversation, then verify with members and wider stakeholders.
The Roadmap
CILIP Council will develop a roadmap.
Ownership and implementation
CILIP Council will implement the Roadmap, seeking involvement from stakeholders.
See the programme timetable for more details.
