About us

CILIP Ireland has a duty to promote high quality library and information services and to advise government, employers and other bodies on all aspects of library and information provision.

Mission Statement

Working throughout the region, CILIP Ireland aims to:

  • set, maintain, monitor and promote standards of excellence in the creation, management, exploitation and sharing of information and knowledge resources
  • support the principle of equality of access to information, ideas and works of the imagination which it affirms is fundamental to a thriving economy, democracy, culture and civilisation
  • enable its Members to achieve and maintain the highest professional standards in all aspects of delivering an information service, both for the professional and the public good.

The structure and activities of the branch can be considered from four main aspects:

  • Education: to continue to promote local professional qualifications and courses offered in library and information work by the University of Ulster; to continue to promote the Framework of Qualifications, especially MCLIP and ACLIP qualifications.
  • Advocacy: to provide essential support to the new single library authority; to continue to deliver training and marketing events which build our information society and strengthen essential partnerships and networking for all involved with libraries and information; to promote CILIP as a professional organisation and be the voice of the profession through our advocacy role.
  • Community: to continue to strengthen the role of libraries to their communities through supporting and actively responding to consultation responses and any community activity on behalf of the membership; to support the membership through an active and innovative local branch committee; to continue to communicate through its newsletter, CILIP Ireland News, and engage its existing members and attract new members through its website.
  • Effectiveness: to concentrate on a service to its membership which is out-come driven and develops the workforce through supporting workforce development and providing training opportunities; to speak for the library and information sector and build the profession by growing our membership, promoting best practice and facilitating knowledge sharing and effective networking.
