Visit to the Kew Gardens Herbarium, Library, Art & Archives
Wednesday 18th July 2012
11.30am
There is NO CHARGE for this event
We have been offered the opportunity of a guided tour of the Kew Gardens Library. The visit will include a tour of the Main Library & Reading Room, where there are items from the collections permanently on display. The library includes material relating to specialized horticulture, horticultural history and management and has a collection on botanic gardens and garden history.
It will be necessary to make your own travel arrangements to the meeting point at Kew at the HLAA Building (Herbarium – Library & Archives). There will be no charge for this event and the maximum number of places available is 15 people.
You will need to arrive promptly for an 11.30am start and it is anticipated that the tour will take approximately an hour and a half during which time there will be an opportunity to ask questions. A visit to the Gardens may also be possible following the tour for those that are interested.
This event is aimed at library staff and anyone with an interest in horticulture.
Here is the web page for the library and archives: http://www.kew.org/library
How to get there is probably best to use their web page:

The main library is in a building close to Kew Green to the right of the Main Gates and there is a map on the Kew website which shows this.

Please arrive promptly at 9.45 am.

We are very honoured because the Library is opening specifically for our visit, it does not normally open on a Saturday. The Chawton House Library main collection focuses on works written by women in English during the period 1600 to 1830. The Library holds early editions of works from the period; many of the books in the collection are rare and in some cases even unique. www.chawton.org/library/collections.html
*** Lunch at the Greyfriar ***
Lunch is not included in the cost, but we do have a room set aside for our use. You can preorder your lunch from either the restaurant or bar snack menu. The Greyfriar public house is situated in Chawton, Hants opposite the Jane Austen House Museum. It is the quintessential old wood beam type of pub, in a beautiful unspoiled Hampshire village. The type of place where time seems to have stopped and you can easily while away the hours over a great pint complemented by some astonishing home made food. www.thegreyfriar.co.uk
*** Jane Austen's House Museum, tour, 2.30 pm ***
The novelist Jane Austen is known worldwide for her popular novels describing the society of pre-industrial England. She spent the last eight years of her life here at Chawton in the 17th century house which is now preserved in her memory. www.jane-austens-house-museum.org.uk/index.php

The whole committee will stand for election/re-election at the AGM, with the exception of the Treasurer, whose post will become vacant. We would like to invite anyone who is looking for ways to develop their local professional networks to consider this exciting opportunity to stand for election to the post of Treasurer. The current Treasurer, Charmian Oldman is happy to talk to anyone interested about what is involved - email
charmian.oldman@winchester.ac.uk or ring 01962 827374.
In addition, we are always looking for new committee members, and both James and Charmian will gladly discuss this with anyone who is interested in standing for election to the committee at the AGM. Getting involved in committee work as an officer or committee member looks good on a CV or Chartership application.
14:30 - 15:00 Refreshments and networking
15:00 - 16:30 Anything but Google!
Are you having problems with Google? Fed up with Google unilaterally deciding to search for something completely different? Confused by Google including irrelevant tweets from complete strangers in your results? You can say “No” to Google. Abandoning Google altogether may not be possible but there are good and in some cases better alternatives. This session will suggest options for general web search, different types of information and media. What are the pros and cons and can they replace Google? And if you can’t quite manage a totally Google-free day, there will be a few tips on reining in Google’s exuberance.
