PAST EVENTS

Christmas Quiz

43 people attended and a profit of £74.79 was made.  There was a mixture of people from different sectors but the majority came from SCC, past and present staff.  Everyone seemed to enjoy it.

Surrey University visit

22 people attended and a profit of £70 was made.  The visit was very much enjoyed and Oliver received positive feedback.  Charging did not prevent the tour from being fully booked.  It would be good to arrange another visit in the future. Many thanks to Oliver for organising this

Annie Mauger talk

This is definitely a major event – not to be missed!

CILIP’s Chief Executive Annie Mauger will be guest speaker at a CILIP in Surrey meeting to be held on Wednesday 26th October 2011, at Epsom Library starting at 6.30 p.m.

CILIP’s new Chief Executive has had something of a baptism of fire. The huge issues facing the profession, the organization and the services that CILIP offers and supports have been the focus for Annie’s attention since taking up the job. She has confronted these issues with a vigour and energy that have made a considerable impact in political, media and service arenas.

But central to all of this is the future of CILIP as an organisation, and the role it plays and the support it provides to its membership.

Annie will be covering a wide range of issues that concern everybody working in the Library and Information sector. All are welcome to attend this meeting, from Surrey and the surrounding areas. Full details and application form can be found in the word document below. Please reply by Friday 21st October 2011 and feel free to email John Hobson at Hobsonjohn9@aol.com if you have any further questions.

Venue: HMP Downview and High Down, Sutton Lane, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5PD Click here for a MAP

You have an opportunity to visit one of the two prisons situated in the East of Surrey.  HMP Downview is a closed prison for women at Sutton in Surrey, converted from the former nurses' home of Banstead Hospital. The prison opened in 1989

HMP High Down opened in September 1992 and is the last of five repeat prisons based upon the design implemented for Bullingdon Prison and was built to supplement the current stock of London Prisons. It is a Category B Local Prison, which accommodates prisoners whether remand or sentenced.

The visit will include a tour of parts of one of the Prisons and its Library and will include a talk by the library staff about the prison library service.

All visitors need photo ID in the form of a passport or photo driving licence.  You will not be allowed in without this.  There is a list of items which you cannot take into the prison and this includes mobile phones.  The best plan is only to bring what you need for travel and the visit.  Further details will be given before to those who book on to the visit, but contact me if you would like to know before booking.

Coffee/tea and biscuits will be available in the library during the talk.

21 March 2011 - visit historic Cranston Library at Reigate. Two sessions for up to 10 persons per session.

A hidden treasure on your doorstep: an opportunity to visit the library that lays claim to being the earliest Public Lending Library in England.

The Cranston Library, founded in 1701 by the Revd Andrew Cranston, Vicar of Reigate and Master of Reigate Grammar School, is located, as it has been since its foundation, in a small chamber above the vestry in St Mary’s Church. It has a collection of over 2000 volumes, the majority of which were collected during the lifetime of the founder, and contains works of literature, history, geography, natural history, science, mathematics and classics, as well as scripture, theology and devotion. The Library is cared for by Trustees, who endeavour to maintain it as an early C18 library.

2010

17 November 2010 - Visit to the BBC Music Library, Wood Lane, London

In November and December Cilip in Surrey organised two visits to the BBC Music Library in London.  Peter Linnitt, the Operational Co-Ordinator, kindly conducted a brief tour of the television centre followed by a tour of the Music Library and the collection, plus he spoke about the history of the Music Library and the kind of work it carries out.  Everyone who attended found the visits extremely interesting and enjoyable, though unfortunately no “stars” were glimpsed!

Both visits to the BBC Music Library were very successful with 11 & 13 members attending and the Librarian offering us further visits.  It consisted of a tour of BBC Centre, then into the library with a talk about the Library, followed by a visit to the rolling stacks and a look at some of the original scores.

30 November 2010 - E-books and E-audio Services: the Croydon experience

20 members attended this fully booked event, run at Croydon Central Library with a presentation on Croydon College provision of e books and the Public Library Overdrive.

Following the success of this event, we hope to run a similar session once the new College Library has opened at the end of April

15 December 2010 - CHRISTMAS QUIZ 6 - The Live Tour

This event was well attended with six teams of six taking part. A good time was had by all.
