Introduction to Cataloguing and Classification

A one-day workshop to introduce you to the basic elements of cataloguing and classification.
Designed with the non-cataloguer in mind, this workshop will introduce you to the basic components in the standard catalogue record and offer the chance to engage in practical development of skill in this area of work.
Ideal as an introduction to this area for those who may have entered the library profession through a non-traditional route, or those who are keen to expand their skill range, or for those who wish to update their knowledge.
Areas to be covered include
The building blocks of a catalogue record
Descriptive cataloguing
Subject headings and classification
An introduction to AACR2
An introduction to MARC 21
The purpose of classification
The Dewey Decimal Classification System
Workshop leader: Keith V. Trickey
Keith is lead trainer for Sherrington Sanders and was a part time senior lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University. He has been delivering training in these areas for more than fifteen years and is known for his enthusiasm and humour when dealing with complex topics, making the content more readily available to participants.

Swindon’s Central Library was built in 2008 and formed part of the central town’s regeneration plans. Join CILIP SW on this free visit, hosted by Leon Flower, for a tour of the library nearly 4 years on, including the back of house.
There will also be the opportunity to hear from Swindon’s local studies team about their work or to learn about Swindon’s RFID self service provision. Select your preference when you book.
Teas and coffees will be provided, but please have lunch before your arrival or try the café in the libary.
