CILIP is campaigning for school libraries and school library services as we believe they make an important contribution to society. We all benefit if the next generation is well educated, highly literate and have the necessary understanding and information literacy skills to navigate our increasingly digital world.
How can CILIP members get involved?
This campaign will keep the effectiveness of library support for teaching and learning at the forefront of Head teachers’ and other decision makers’ thinking.
We will be building up a range of web resources for the campaign and hope colleagues from all sectors of the library and information profession across the UK will add their voice to it. While the focus is obviously on school librarians, it will undoubtedly raise the profile of librarians and information professionals overall with the government, the media and the public.
Watch this space. We will be adding campaigning resources to this section of the website from November onwards. Some materials will be focussed on supporting school libraries and individual school librarians while others will be to help support Schools Library Services.
What can you do to support the campaign?
1. Tweet your support and promote the value of school libraries and schools library services by using the hashtag #SHOUTABOUT
2. Find out if your children have access to a well resourced school library and/or Schools Library Service.
3. Speak and/or write to your local authority, head teacher or school governor about ensuring children have access to proper library resources.
4. SHOUT ABOUT the positives – we are also keen to hear any positive case studies and examples of school librarians and Schools Library Services making the difference in children’s lives. Share your stories by emailing campaigning@cilip.org.uk
