A full write up of the event on the IL website can be found here

'Making enrichment work for your library/LRC', CILIP HQ, 7 Ridgmount Street, Friday 4th March, 2011, 3-5pm.

Enrichment activities are regarded as an important way to add value to the teaching and learning experience in our colleges but they are also a great way for us to raise the profile of our libraries and LRCs and emphasise the value of what we do for all our stakeholders.

At our meeting on the Friday 4th March we gathered to share information about what sorts of enrichment activities are being undertaken in libraries and LRCs across the London and South East region.

You can keep up with news about our forthcoming meeting and all sorts of other things on our blog (http://communities.cilip.org.uk/blogs/cofhelasec/default.aspx.)

Using Feedback for Marketing & Untangling Web 2.0 and Me?

The first CoFHE LASEC meeting of the 2010-11 session was held at CILIP HQ, 7 Ridgmount Street, London 3pm-5pm on Friday 26th November, 2010.

Anna Knox, of UEL, talked to the group about how feedback from users can help us to market our library services and Emma Crofts, of Strode's Sixth Form College, shared how she has managed to make progress with incorporating Web 2.0 tools into her service delivery since the Untangling Web 2.0 training day with Phil Bradley CoFHE LASEC organised in April 2010.

Great group discussion followed the presentations along with some informal networking over refreshments. Important news concerning the future of the CoFHE LASEC committee was announced with Stephen Wickens being elected Chair by those present and further posts on the Committee being opened up for expressions of interest.

Managing challenging behaviour for resource centre staff

Thursday 21st May 2009, 9.30-16.00, Merton College, Morden Park, London Road, Morden, Surrey SM4 5QX.

Trainer: Dr Ashby of ACT Consultancy & Training

Dr Ashby has undertaken various positions, including senior management roles in Further Education and the charity sector, specialising in working with young people and adults with drug, alcohol and anger management issues. It is from this background that Dr Ashby brings her experience and expertise together, from both the understanding of the education system, and the people who employ the system, to help raise standards and offer practical solutions.

The course will provide resource centre staff with strategies to minimise inappropriate behaviour. By the end of the course participants will:

Understand why young people embark on challenging behaviour

Be able to use the reasons for challenging behaviour to choose appropriate solutions

Be able to use new techniques to minimise inappropriate behaviours

Understand the new ‘Use of Force in Further Education’ legislation

Be able to use methods to reduce the risk of an aggressive situation becoming violent

Understand the best course of action when violence breaks out Be able to recognise assertive practices when dealing with challenging behaviour Modify body language to be assertive not passive or aggressive

In the morning session non-aggressive behaviour will be considered, from non-compliance to use of mobile phones. In the afternoon specific strategies for managing aggressive behaviour will be considered including issues such as staying safe and ensuring situations do not escalate.

The course considers not only practical strategies but also how participants’ own behaviour can have a significant effect on their success in dealing with a difficult situation, from body language to their own confidence levels.

LASEC AGM 10th June 2008

Masha Garibyan of JISC and the LSE gave a briefing on federated access management to the well-attended CoFHE LASEC AGM at CILIP on 10 June. Federated access is the new system of authentication for further and higher education, which goes live in July. Masha's presentation contains a useful page of links for further information - it is available below.

At the AGM the secretary and treasurer, Nick Turner and Mark Tonkiss, stood down. Nick and Mark have a total of thirteen years service to the circle between them and were thanked for everything they have done. Faye Sisson, the Chair, having resigned earlier in the year, the AGM elected new officers, with Tom Roper of South Thames College as chair and Stephen Wickens of Westminster Kingsway College as secretary.
