3.  Membership

Unfortunately Cilip is unable to provide accurate CofHE membership data for the Mid-West Circle area (Oxon, Berks, Bucks, Glos and Wilts). The Circle has an email database of 83 contacts.

4. Circle Events, 2009/10

The 2009 AGM and Summer Event was held on 30th June 2009 at Harcourt Hill Campus, Oxford Brookes University. The event, Managing up, down and sideways, was run by Sheila Ritchie, well-known consultant and trainer on management and leadership skills in libraries and elsewhere. The day included both discussion and practical activities (a motivation inventory and a project management game) around themes of team performance and team building. It was greatly enjoyed by all participants, so it was disappointing that we only had 11 delegates taking part.

By contrast, our Autumn Event (joint with UC&R),“Tell us what you want (what you really, really want…) Library surveys and promotion on a shoestring”, held at the Kassam Stadium on the outskirts of Oxford, was packed out with 34 delegates. Kicking off with Anne Rowlands and Stephen Cullimore from Barnet College presenting on the art of user surveys, we followed up with Jan Haines from Oxford Brookes University sharing her experiences of running focus groups; the afternoon took the form of a marketing workshop presented by experienced CILIP marketing and promotional trainer Terry Kendrick, and certainly ensured the day ended on a high with delegates buzzing with ideas to take away and try back at work.

Writeups of both events can be found on the Circle Web site: http://www.cilip.org.uk/get-involved/special-interest-groups/c-of-he/circles/mid-west/Pages/cofhemw_event_reports.aspx

This year’s Autumn Event organisation is being led by UC&R; the event will be held at Wolfson College on Wednesday 24th November around the theme of Web 2.0 technologies in teaching, learning and libraries. More details to follow later in the year.

5. Mid-West Committee

Following the 2009 AGM, some redistribution of Committee roles took place, with Hazel Rothera taking over from Fiona Lees as Chair, Fiona taking up the post of Events Officer and Rob Collier taking over Hazel’s previous role as Secretary.  Fiona has had to step aside from active Committee work temporarily in 2010 for family reasons; we wish her all the best and look forward to seeing her back with us in the future. Lesley Kumiega remains as Treasurer and Martin Strugnell as Membership Secretary and Web/Publicity Officer.

The Committee is very keen to recruit new members; Committee membership provides excellent opportunities for professional networking and event organisation and can be particularly beneficial for developing new professionals. If you or a colleague or team member are interested in finding out more, do contact the Chair (contact details above) or speak to any member of the Committee.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Committee for their hard work in organising the last year’s events, and all those members (and non-members!) who have supported us by attending.

Hazel Rothera, 10th May 2010

CoFHE Mid-West Circle

Minutes of Annual General Meeting, 30th June 2009, 10.30 am, Oxford Brookes University (Harcourt Hill Campus)

1. Present:

see appended list of attendees.

2. Apologies for absence:

none

3. Minutes of the 2008 AGM:

adoption of the minutes as a true and correct record was proposed by Martin Strugnell and seconded by Lesley Kumiega
4.Annual Report:

The Chair presented the Annual Report and briefly discussed it. We are pleased to see that the UC&R BBO group is active again after over a year of hiatus.  The 2008 AGM and Summer Event at Milton Keynes had provided lots of good networking opportunities and some very interesting speakers. Unfortunately the February event had had to be cancelled due to the extreme weather conditions, but we plan to run the Autumn event on a similar theme.

Alison Sutton has unfortunately resigned from the Committee due to a change of job role, and Anthea Beaumont is stepping down after a number of years’ sterling service; they will both be much missed. The Chair is standing down from her role after three years, but will be remaining on the Committee; FL particularly thanked the rest of the Committee for their support over the past year.

Adoption of the Annual Report was proposed by Rob Collier and seconded by Lesley Kumiega.

5. Treasurer’s Report:

This was presented to the meeting. To June 2009 the Circle’s expenditure for the year exceeded its income by £574.25, giving us a balance of £2560.17.

6.

There being no other business previously notified to the Chair, and no items raised for discussion in Open Forum, the AGM was declared closed at 10.45.
