This event follows the UPC Annual Seminar at University of Plymouth, so we hope those of you in UPC will be able to stay on for the afternoon.  It is also open to everyone else – COFHE member or not. 

Chris Kelland will be demonstrating the LSIS Excellence Gateway http://www.excellencegateway.org.uk, how Learning Resources services can use the gateway and contribute to its development.  We will also be seeking your ideas for future COFHE events.

Are your usage stats as high as they could or should be? Get tips & tricks from over 100 librarians on how to increase usage of your

online resources. Share your experiences - good and bad.  This workshop will be a good opportunity to network with librarians in your region, it is open to all libraries – you do not need to be a Credo Reference subscriber.

Made You Look and Made You Stare: Marketing and Promotion Strategies for Learning Resources Teams

As it becomes ever more important for us to demonstrate our impact within our organisations, so effective marketing and promotion of our services and resources is vital to make the most of what we have!

Our exciting programme for the day includes a hands-on practical workshop led by Janet Billings from the company Made You Look!, who has extensive experience in visual display and design techniques.

In addition we have Kay Grieves from the University of Sunderland who has been partly responsible for developing a strategic marketing toolkit that puts your customers at the centre of service planning, delivery and promotion. Its 7 easy steps will help you to create marketing plans that clarify distinct service offers, target key customer groups and communicate the benefits of your services effectively.

Delegates will be split into two groups for the day and will swop over at lunchtime to get full benefit of both workshops. All delegates will receive a copy of the marketing toolkit to take away at the end of the day.

In order to make the day effective for delegates, numbers are limited to 30 so please book early to avoid disappointment and to take advantage of an early bird offer!

Making Info Lit Interactive: More than a handout!

· As we enter the second decade of the 21st Century, how are Information Professionals in the academic sector delivering information literacy?

· Is use being made of new technologies? Are sessions interactive or passive?

 The day includes:

An opportunity to discuss information literacy delivery in your institution with colleagues from across the sector. Please bring materials for discussion.

A demonstration of University of West of England (UWE) Library Services iSkillZone (http://iskillzone.uwe.ac.uk ), a web based multimedia interactive resource to aid students and academics in their use of the library and its resources and to develop students’ information literacy (IL). This session will be hands on.

A demonstraton of how Exeter College Subject Librarians are using simple but effective active teaching methods to engage students in the learning process. Find out how to make your sessions active.

Lee is currently eLearning Training Manager for City of Bristol College. He has 9 years experience as an LRC Manager. This session will give delegates the opportunity to share their approach to Information Literacy.

Jane Tomlinson and Adrian Macey - Exeter College - Play your cards right!
Making information skills workshops more interesting for the student.
Jane Tomlinson is the Deputy Head of the Information & Learning Services at Exeter College and until recently has been the FE representative on the CILIP CSG Information Literacy group. Adrian Macey is the Subject Librarian for the Faculty for Sport, Leisure and Tourism and the Faculty for Public Services. In their session Adrian and Jane will be demonstrating how Exeter College Subject Librarians are using simple but effective active teaching methods to engage students in the learning process.

James Bisset  - Enter the iSkillZone
James is an Assistant Librarian for UWE Library Services.  His role is split between supporting Bristol Law School and E-learning developments across UWE Library Services as a whole. UWE Library Services have developed the iSkillZone (http://iskillzone.uwe.ac.uk ), a web based multimedia interactive resource to aid students and academics in their use of the library and its resources and to develop students’ information literacy (IL) skills. The workshop would introduce and demonstrate the iSkillZone and then focus on its uptake by students and its use by academic staff and their students. There will be the opportunity for hands-on.

Sue Caporn, LRC Manager City of Bristol College

Sue will talk about the Information and Library Services (ILS) NVQs, which have been delivered at the College for over 10 years. She'll cover the content of the NVQ standards, explain how candidates build up a portfolio of evidence, and will describe the assessment procedure

Chartership and New Framework of Qualifications
Bridget Knutson, Chair of Career Development Group West Country

What is Chartership, how do you get it, and what can it do for you? An overview of CILIP's Framework of Qualifications, covering the ACLIP and Revalidation awards, as well as a personal experience of Chartering through the ACLIP route. This presentation will cover the Framework overall, details of the Certification and Revalidation processes and information about the support and options available to participants.

Claire Puckett, Curriculum Development & Progression, Cultural Services South West Lifelong Learning Network

Two new Foundation Degrees have been developed in the South West with the support of the SWLLN. Details of these courses will be outlined, including part-time and continuing professional development options, entry and progression routes, and an overview of course content. Information resources to support career development for the sector have been developed, and there will be an opportunity to comment on these before publication.

Masters in Information and Library Management
Jackie Chelin, Deputy Librarian, UWE, Library Services/ Module Leader on the MSc ILM
Jackie will provide an outline of the course, how it has developed and involvement with local employers. The time will be used to pose questions for discussion about how people think the course ought to be developing, how it might fit with Foundation degrees/NVQs and how all these types of qualification are viewed by employers in terms of essential and desirable requirements.

Brief Biographies of Speakers:


Jackie Chelin, Deputy Librarian, Library Services University of the West of England

I have worked at UWE for over 15 years, firstly as a Faculty Librarian for the Business School, then as IT Development Librarian and, latterly as Deputy Librarian with responsibility for academic development. I have taught on the MSc ILM since its inception at the University of Bristol, and collaborated with an academic colleague to transfer it to UWE in 2005.

Sue Caporn, LRC Manager City of Bristol College

I am a Learning Resource Centre Manager at City of Bristol College, and co-ordinate the NVQ in Library and Information Services programme at the College. I have worked in special libraries, HE libraries and in Further Education LRCs, and have a particular interest in staff development.

Lizz Jennings, Information Librarian (E-Resources), University of Bath

I am the ACLIP Support Officer for the West Country. I work at the University of Bath Library as an Information Librarian, dealing with enquiries about electronic resources and resolving access problems. I have also worked in public libraries for Wiltshire and Surrey, prison libraries in Wiltshire and two different workplace libraries in London. I achieved my ACLIP in June 2005 and my Chartership in March 2008.

Bridget Knutson, Kings of Wessex School

I am Chair for the West Country Career Development Group. Previous posts include Treasurer, Academic Rep, and North Somerset Rep. I work in the Learning Resource Centre with 2 assistants at The Kings of Wessex Upper School in Cheddar with 13-18 year olds. I have also worked in public libraries for many years in North Somerset, Bristol and East Sussex. In between East Sussex and Bristol I worked at The Staff College until the library moved to London. I took my degree as a mature student at University of Northumbria in Information and Library Management finishing in 1995.

Claire Puckett, Curriculum Development & Progression, Cultural Services South West Lifelong Learning Network

I joined the SWLLN in November 2007 to facilitate the development of new HE courses and progression routes in the cultural services sector (libraries, museums, archives and galleries). I have an MSc in Information and Library Management from the University of Bristol, and have worked as a professional librarian in a variety of roles in Higher and Further education institutions in the UK and Canada. I then moved into HE academic administration, focussing on Foundation degree development and validation, student support and quality assurance, before joining the SWLLN. I have a particular interest in career change and lifelong learning.

11.00am-12.15pm: Bobby Fortnam – COLRIC Peer Inspection

Former Learning Centres Manager at Exeter College, Bobby guided the service through a Grade 1 Outstanding CoLRiC inspection in January 2008 and is also a COLRIC assessor, so will be sharing her experiences of both sides of the process.

12.45-2.00pm: Lee Bryant – FE Toolkit

Lee is an LRC (Learning Resource Centre) Manager at the City of Bristol College, one of the largest colleges in the UK with over 10 years experience of the FE sector. He has had input into the FE Quality tool. The toolkit demonstrates how libraries and LRC services can address the five key questions of an OFSTED Inspection.

2.15-3.30pm: Virginia Havergal - Inspiring Learning for All

Virginia is the eLearning Advisor for Learning Resources with the JISC Regional Support Centre in the South West. Prior to this she worked for the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and played a national role in supporting libraries in their use of Inspiring Learning for All – a quality framework to identify informal learning outcomes which are becoming as important as formal learning for our learners. Virginia will lead a lively session on the toolkit leaving you Glowing with enthusiasm
