National council is the ruling body of the Career Development Group.

National council
National council is the governing body of the Career Development Group. It is made up of:
- President
- Past President
- Vice President
- 11 Honorary Officers
- 1 voting representative from each of the Divisions
- Representatives of the Affiliated Members’ National Committee and PTEG

Division representatives
Each Division selects its own representative to the Career Development Group Council. The role of the representative is to:
- represent their members' views to Council, be it in formulation of Group policy, in discussion of matters referred to Council, or in initiating debate on particular matters of concern
- report fully in writing to their Divisional committee on discussion at Council and to ensure that any work referred to Divisions is completed on time
- participate on an individual level at Council meetings

Honorary officers
National council meetings
- National Council meets three times a year, always on a Monday, in different locations around the country including CILIP headquarters in London.
- The first Council of the year starts on Monday lunchtime, followed by the Presidential Reception, to which all Officers and Divisional representatives are invited, and continues all day Tuesday.
