New Professionals Conference 2011 - Call for Papers

 

Calling all New Library & Information Professionals.  Have you joined the profession, either through work or study, in the last 5 years?  If yes, why not submit a proposal for the 3rd New Professionals Conference?  

 

"Professionalism and Activism in a Time of Downturn"

 

Date: Monday 20th June 2011

Venue: University of Manchester.

Organisers: Career Development Group, a special interest group of CILIP: The Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals.

 

Call for proposals

We invite proposals for contributions from colleagues who have joined the profession, either through work or study, in the last 5 years.

First-time presenters, current LIS students and individuals from diverse backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.

 

Prize for best paper

There will be a prize for the best paper, as voted for by delegates on the day.

 

Publication of papers

A selection of papers will be published in Impact, the group’s eJournal.

 

Presentations

Help preparing the presentations and standard travel and accommodation expenses can be provided on request, so consider taking advantage of this excellent opportunity for continuous professional development!

Deadlines:

  • Proposals (no longer than 300 words) must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 15th April 2011.
  • Speakers should be aiming to fill approximately 20 minutes on the programme with their paper. Proposals should be submitted to Franko Kowalczuk at franko.kowalczuk@kcl.ac.uk
  • Authors of accepted proposals will be contacted by Friday 29th April.
  • Full proposals must be submitted by Monday 6th June 2011.

Conference Themes and Focus

We welcome papers sharing experiences and exploring issues relevant to the overall theme: Professionalism and Activism in a Time of Downturn, including:

  • Why getting involved is now more important than ever.
  • Why your profession needs you.
  • Contacts and partnerships you can make through networking.
  • What activism can do for your CV and self-confidence.
  • Engaging employers who may not have very much money to spend on training and development.
  • Roles in the information profession which have diverged from the traditional librarian role.
