About CLSIG

What we do

CLSIG supports and promotes the professional interests of members in commercial, legal and scientific workplace libraries & information services. This is facilitated by providing professional development training, networking opportunities for members, and representing their interests within CILIP and the wider information community.

Professional development is promoted through an active programme of events and visits. Joint events with other groups have been actively promoted for several years, and since CLSIG membership covers the whole UK as well as abroad, efforts are now being made to hold more CLSIG events outside the South-East. CLSIG News, published six times a year, keeps members up to date on all aspects of the commercial information sector. Personal CLSIG membership is open to all, whether CILIP members or not.

The Commercial, Legal & Scientific Information Group (formerly Industrial & Commercial Libraries Group) is one of the oldest special interest groups first of the Library Association and later after the merger with the Institute of Information Scientists, of the new joint body, CILIP. Since the establishment of our new website as part of CILIP's, we have decided it is time to rebrand our image and appearance and have adopted the logo above to represent the Group. Our aims & objectives however are unchanged: we exist to support and promote the professional interests of all members in commercial, industrial, special and workplace libraries & information units. We are aiming to develop further our already active programme of events to facilitate professional development; to encourage and support greater activity in our regional Groups, and always to represent and support the commercial information sector on national and topical issues.

So if these are your interests too, come and join us!

Join our committee!

CLSIG is going places – wouldn’t you like to be part of it?

The CLSIG committee is always looking for people prepared to give a little time every month to assisting with our administration, events and activities.  We are an ambitious, active and friendly group, the work is rewarding, will raise your profile and help your career, and at the same time is a lot of fun.

Over the past five years CLSIG has developed its focus and broadened its activities to appeal to many new areas in the commercial sector, and we continually seek to maintain and advance our services to members and to raise the profile of the group.  We try to keep ahead of every new development in the information world, and have events planned for every month of 2010. Our training seminars offer high quality, excellent value-for-money opportunities for career development, and we have been awarded CILIP’s Seal of recognition for our CPD seminars.

You could participate in the group’s work in a number of ways.  If you’d rather start with a ‘toe in the water’ to get a feel for who we are and what we do, join us as a Committee Member to see what is going on and where you think you might comfortably fit.  Later you may feel like taking on one of the specific roles we need to fill for a fully-functioning committee.

Currently we’re seeking to fill several committee jobs, including

• We’re anxious to add at least one new member to the Events Team.  They are busier than ever with forward planning, finding venues, signing up speakers and analyzing the surveys we run regularly to find out what exactly our members want to attend.  You will be welcomed warmly into this sub-group, who are currently rushed off their feet.

• For some time we’ve been redefining the role of Press & Publicity Officer for the group.  This needs to be someone who can work closely with the Membership Secretary disseminating information on our events, but who will also undertake liaison with the information publications, web listings and calendars to ensure that everyone knows in good time what CLSIG is offering to its members and potential new members.  This is a job for someone who is good with deadlines and accuracy – and of course one of the perks will be compulsory attendance at industry events and parties on behalf of CLSIG!

Nearly all this work above can be done from your home/office, so committee members can come from anywhere in the UK.  Committee meetings are held approximately every two months – normally in London, mid-week and in the evening (18.30 – 20.30-ish).  Expenses are paid in full for attendance at CLSIG meetings, wherever you live.

When we have the committee up to strength, our Chair, Penny Bailey will be looking for the right person to become Vice-Chair of the group.  This is very much a “supporting role” – but in the best sense!    Penny will need someone she can rely on to who can deputise for her in a number of areas,  including representation at events and other activities, and communication with the information media and other external bodies.

Does any of the above sound interesting to you?  To hear more, or to express your interest in joining us in any capacity, please contact either
Penny Bailey at chair@clsig.org.uk or
Irena Valouchova at secretary@clsig.org.uk
We would love to have you on board!

CLSIG awarded CILIP Seal of Recognition

CLSIG has been awarded the CILIP Seal of Recognition following an assessment of the first event in CLSIG's Professional Development Club series, on IT for Information Professionals.

The assessment report commented very positively on the positive feedback from the first seminar, and in addition noted that not only were the seminars useful in their own right, but also that they encouraged CILIP members to share their knowledge and experience, and to develop their own presentation skills at the same time.
