Conferences

The Diversity Group runs a conference every two years and takes part in Umbrella, the CILIP conference, as well as presenting the Diversity Awards.

Diversity Group at Umbrella - 12-13 July 2011

The Diversity Group ran four sessions in partnership with other CILIP Special Interest Groups at the Umbrella 2011 conference: www.cilip.org.uk/umbrella2011

Session 1 Tuesday 12 July 11.45am – 1.00pm

With Community Services Group and Publicity and Public Relations Group

  • Digital inclusion and social change - Young people’s access (or not) to web 2.0 and social media in libraries.  In schools and colleges the level of access varies wildly. Policies are often applied with little knowledge about the uses of social media and how young people interact with it, and libraries are therefore complicit in excluding this already marginalised group and contributing to the digital divide. Emma Hadfield, Diversity Group Committee and Learning Resources Manager, Thomas Rotherham College

  • Out of many, we are one. Maxine will explore the idea that it is from strength gained by being ourselves (our "differences") that we come together as equals. Maxine Miller, Library and Collection Manager, Tate Library and Archives
