Re-framing disability: portraits from the Royal College of Physicians 14 February – 8 July 2011

An exhibition exploring four centuries of hidden history with responses from disabled people today. The RCP is hosting an exhibition exploring historical portraits of disabled people held within our collections, taking place from 14 February to 8 July 2011. The exhibition includes the voices of 27 disabled participants from across the UK, who came together to discuss the historical portraits and their own identities and lives.

The accompanying events programme includes a BSL-interpreted tour and audio described tour of the RCP’s Grade I listed building. The exhibition will tour to further venues throughout 2011–12. Between 28 July and 29 September 2011 the exhibition will be held at Shape, the disability-led arts organisation, in Kentish Town, London.

The Frances Lincoln Diverse Voices Children’s Book Award - 23 June 2011

Diverse voices logo

23 June Frances Lincoln Limited, the award-winning publisher, and Seven Stories, the Centre for Children’s Books, are delighted with the success to date of the Diverse Voices Award, set up in memory of Frances Lincoln (1945-2001) to encourage and promote diversity in children’s fiction. The prize of £1,500 plus the option for Janetta Otter-Barry at Frances Lincoln Children’s Books to publish the novel is awarded to the best manuscript for 8-to-12-year-olds that celebrates diversity in the widest possible sense.

The winner of the second Frances Lincoln Diverse Voices Award in 2010 was Tom Avery, a teacher working in a culturally diverse inner city school, for "Too Much Trouble", a story the judges described as ‘an Oliver Twist of our times’. The contemporary adventure story is a dramatic page-turner about Emmanuel and Prince, two brothers who fall in with a gang of pickpockets when their family abandons them. Fast paced and full of tension, it explores big issues such as illegal immigration, what makes a family and the ethical dilemmas surrounding crimes committed for survival.

The presentation of this year’s Award and the publication of Too Much Trouble by Tom Avery, winner of last year’s Award is on Thursday 23 June 2011, 1 – 4 pm in the Artist’s Attic, Seven Stories. Please contact Liz Paton by Thursday 9th June for information, email: liz.paton@sevenstories.org.uk, telephone 0845 271 0777 x 706
