SCOTLAND

Suspension of the Information Services Group (Scotland)

At the Annual General Meeting of the Information Services Group (Scotland), held on 27 January, 2012, a motion was passed to suspend the activities of the Group.

Over the years ISG (Scotland) has organised many successful training events and tours of libraries around Scotland. Sessions have also been organised regularly as part of the CILIPS Branches and Groups Day at the annual conference. Recent events include a visit to the BBC Digital Library in Glasgow, a study day at the University of the West of Scotland on getting the best out of the web, and a very successful and thought-provoking lecture on information literacy given by Professor Tara Brabazon in Edinburgh.

While events have been well-attended, and feedback on individual events has been positive, they have not resulted in an increase in ISG membership in Scotland. Moreover, the Committee’s membership had been static for several years and the need to refresh and enlarge the Committee had become urgent. Over the last three years, various attempts have been made to recruit new Committee members with little or no success.

In the current climate many groups are experiencing difficulty in maintaining their support but there are still a range of professional development events available in Scotland and I am confident that others will fill the gap left by ISG (Scotland).

I gratefully acknowledge the work of successive Committee members and Chairs who over the years have brought a wide variety of successful events to members in Scotland.

Gordon Hunt (Chair)
