The main feature in the November issue of the journal is Sidsel Bech-Petersen’s analysis of Aarhus Public Libraries’ expansive and inclusive approach to library mashups. George Kerr reports on the use of smartsm as a book selection tool in public libraries, and Cindy Chamel takes a realistic and practical look at the use of the web as a search tool for multimedia sources.
The news column covers a range of topics, including the use of iTunes at Birmingham City University, an assessment of Dreamweaver by Erik Vlietinck, AV innovation at the Darwin Centre of the Natural History Museum, and a new Fogscreen projector. Digital resources include the virtual Codex Sinaiticus, there is coverage of some new checkout software and an online course in trade union history at the University College Newport.
Book reviews are by Lina Coelho on Going Beyond Google, and Christine Urquahart on the Information Commons.
Ken Cheetham et al write about the response of the Centre for Dental Technology at UWIC to changes in the learning delivery requirements of dental technicians. This project was initiated in the wake of a reduction in the number of dental technology departments, and the consequent need for further development of distance learning. After considering several possible solutions, Adobe Acrobat Connect, coupled with the use of relatively inexpensive PC and webcam support, was chosen. A number of resource and pedagogical benefits have been identified, and the system is now used for inter-institutional collaboration in course delivery.
Technology Roundup by Kevin Curran concentrates on Common Craft Videos and TinEye, which Cindy Chamel also uses an example in her article.
