Patent and Trademark Group

About us

The Patent and Trade Mark Group is a Special Interest Group of CILIP.

It was formed as a result of merging the Patent and Trademark Searchers Association with the Institute of Information Scientists (IIS) in 1978. In April 2002, PATMG became a Special Interest Group of CILIP - the new body formed by the merger of the IIS and the Library Association.

Membership of the Group is a useful way of interacting with others to exchange ideas and information techniques. The main aims of PATMG are to provide a networking group for individuals working in the field of patent or trademark information, and to promote/lobby for the needs of information professionals (e.g. with Patent Offices, British Library, Information Supplier organisations).

PATMG runs useful regular events covering various aspects of patent and trademark information work, as well as an occasional Patent Information Jamboree event, held in London.

Searcher Newsletter is issued six times a year to help members stay up to date with developments in the field and upcoming issues relevant to PATMG.

The PIUG / PATMG Patent Information Discussion List (PIUG-L) serves as a forum for discussion of questions relating to patent information. News and questions and concerns about new developments in patent information from patent information users, patent offices, including the USPTO, the EPO and others, and patent information vendors are encouraged. Indexing and searching techniques, new databases and systems (online, in-house or on CD-ROM), and developments in existing databases are suitable as topics for discussion.

To join us, just nominate PATMG as one of your CILIP SIGs, or if not a member of CILIP, fill in a copy of our application form. Note that you can join PATMG separately from CILIP, but in so doing not all PATMG website functionality may be available to you.
