Umbrella 2011
The Prison Libraries Group was involved in two sessions at the recent Umbrella conference held at Hatfield University. One was titled 'The global librarian' and was jointly held with the International Library and Information Group and the Diversity Group. The other was called 'Working on the wrong side of the digital divide' and was a joint session with the Community Services Group. Both sessions were well attended and received positive feedback from attendees.
The Margaret Watson Award

The 2010 Margaret Watson Award for Best Practice has been won by Param Rani, Library Assistant at HMP Birmingham.
Congratulations to Param, who was presented with the certificate by CILIP President Biddy Fisher at the 2010 Prison Libraries Group conference. Param has managed to develop great reader development initiatives while also covering the librarian vacancy until a new librarian was appointed.
The 2009 Margaret Watson Award for Best Practice has been won by Alan Smith, Library Supervisor at HMYOI Brinsford.
The award was presented by CILIP President Peter Griffiths and Margaret Watson on 6 October 2009 at the Prison Libraries Group conference.
Alan has worked at Brinsford since 2007 and combines his love of reading and creative writing with encouraging the prisoners to come to the library and take part in writing workshops. Alan also shares his creative writing experience and skills with other prison libraries in Staffordshire.
The Group were delighted to make the 2008 Margaret Watson Award for Best Practice to Alison Dine of HMP Portland, who received her framed certificate at the Conference from CILIP President, Bruce Madge.
Congratulations to Alison who has achieved a considerable amount in her work and continuing professional development.
