AGM
CILIP’s Annual General Meeting is held once a year in October. The AGM’s business includes considering CILIP’s annual report, the Honorary Treasurer’s report and accounts.The meeting also determines the amount of subscriptions. It provides an excellent opportunity for members to ask any questions before voting on business items on the agenda. Members are strongly encouraged to attend and make their views known.

Council and Office of the President
Elections to Council and the Office of the President take place each autumn. Members are actively encouraged both to stand for election and to vote.
COUNCIL
CILIP's work is governed by its Council, set up under the Royal Charter. The Council is representative of the CILIP membership and makes decisions of strategic importance to CILIP. The Council consists of twelve individuals (with provision for up to three co-options). It is elected by the membership and meets in London several times a year as well as communicating electronically between meetings. Read the byelaws for more information about Council’s functions.
The twelve CILIP Councillors (trustees) are each elected for a three-year term. This means that CILIP holds an election every autumn to determine who will fill four trustee vacancies, their terms commencing from the start of the following year. Details of the 2010 election results.
REQUIREMENTS: CILIP individual members. Candidates are required to produce a manifesto and five supporting statements from other CILIP members
TRAINING: Councillors are invited to attend an Induction Day shortly before their first Council meeting. Training sessions are held throughout the year
SUPPORT: Governance Unit
TIME COMMITMENT: Substantial: eight to ten meetings a year of Council, plus electronic discussion and involvement on Task & Finish Groups

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
The Office of the President consists of the President, Vice-President and (currently) the Immediate Past-President. The President attends Council meetings, represents CILIP at functions, co-ordinates the work of each of the Panels reporting to the Office of the President and sits on these Panels. The Vice-President chairs the Interim Policy Forum, sits on Panels and assists the President. S/he is elected by the membership at the same time as the trustees and becomes President of the CILIP the year after her/his Vice-Presidency. For more information see the byelaws.
REQUIREMENTS: CILIP member
TRAINING: No training given so candidates should be confident they can fulfil the role adequately. It may help to have been a Councillor in the past.
SUPPORT: Chief Executive’s Office
TIME COMMITMENT: Substantial
Appointments to members of the Panels that sit under the Office of the President (eg the Audit Panel and Equal Opportunities Panel) take place on a rolling programme, with members appointed for fixed terms as set out in CILIP’s regulations or as decided by the Panel.
AUDIT PANEL
The Audit Panel provides independent scrutiny and monitoring of financial matters and other areas of governance within CILIP. Its aim is to ensure probity and scrutiny in these areas.
REQUIREMENTS: CILIP member
TRAINING: Applicants are assessed according to appropriate criteria
SUPPORT: Governance Unit
TIME COMMITMENT: Moderate. The Panel meets approximately three times a year in London. Terms are for three years with the next scheduled vacancies arising in 2012
DISCIPLINARY PANEL
The Disciplinary Panel makes investigations into disciplinary complaints referred to it by the Chief Executive.
REQUIREMENTS: CILIP member, usually for the past ten years
TRAINING: Applicants are assessed according to appropriate criteria
SUPPORT: Governance Unit
TIME COMMITMENT: Dependent entirely on number of disciplinary cases. Usually very low. Membership is reviewed annually
ELECTIONS PANEL
The Elections Panel oversees, and advises on, the whole election process to CILIP Council from the call for nominations to the declaration of results.
REQUIREMENTS: CILIP member
TRAINING: Applicants are assessed according to appropriate criteria
SUPPORT: Governance Unit
TIME COMMITMENT: Low. The Election Panel meets usually once a year. Members also supervise vote-counting on Election Day. Terms are for three years with the next scheduled vacancies arising in 2012
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES AND DIVERSITY PANEL
The Equal Opportunities and Diversity Panel advises CILIP on the policies, strategies and actions necessary to promote an inclusive profession. It supports and encourages CILIP members and others in providing library and information services that reflect good practice regarding equal opportunities and diversity.
REQUIREMENTS: CILIP member
TRAINING: Applicants are assessed according to appropriate criteria
SUPPORT: Policy and Advocacy Unit
TIME COMMITMENT: Moderate. The Panel meets usually twice a year in London with members volunteering for specific tasks relating to the Panel’s work
ETHICS PANEL
The Ethics Panel provides confidential advice to members facing ethical problems at work and promotes a better understanding of professional ethics within CILIP. It keeps the Ethical Principles and Code of Professional Conduct and CILIP ethics web pages under review and recommends changes when necessary.

SUPPORT: Policy and Advocacy Unit
TIME COMMITMENT: Moderate. The Panel meets usually once a year in London with some electronic working. Members volunteer for specific tasks relating to the Panel’s work
