Nick Fox, Assistant County Librarian,
Hampshire County Library
Towards the Unknown Region
For 60 years the Regional Library Systems
working with the British Library, have co-ordinated catalogue
information and facilitated interlending in the UK. However
the challenges of the last few years have been profound.
Government has created new regional structures, which have
not necessarily been coterminous with previous groupings
and is pursuing a devolution agenda. Digital communications
and the Internet have created a global information marketplace
in which the Region is not obviously relevant. Digital publishing
has created a fluid situation in which information content
is available in multiple media not dependant on physical
location or format. What then is the role of the Region
and of regional interlending, if any, in the UK library
and information service of the new Millennium? What kind
of mindset and strategy are required to rise to the challenge?
