Synopsis
The paper looks at the role of co-operation
and partnerships in the UK in the co-ordination of provision
for the discovery of and access to library materials and
content, including document supply and interlibrary loan.
It looks at the UK’s existing models and roles
of the key players, and outlines the economic, political
and technical factors which are now driving change. It describes
some of the current major national and regional collaborative
initiatives arising in relation to resource discovery, improvements
in physical access, and remote access through interlibrary
loan, document supply and direct access to electronic content
via the web.
It concludes by looking at three recent developments
and initiatives in which co-operation will play an important
role :
-
the impact of changes in UK regional organisations
and structures;
-
the findings of the recent study commissioned
by CURL on Monograph Interlending for the Higher Education
Research Community;
-
the work of the Research Support Libraries
Group and its recommendations, including the proposed
establishment of the Research Libraries Network to lead
and co-ordinate the provision of research information.
