Regional activities
TIM HOBBS was appointed Chief Executive of the
newly-created East Midlands Museums, Libraries and Archives
Council (EMMLAC) in April 2002. Before that his career had
been spent in university libraries, including five years
as Keeper of Special Collections at Glasgow University Library,
and six years as University Librarian at the University
of Leicester.
Synopsis
EMMLAC is one of the new Regional Agencies which
are being created in the nine English regions under the
aegis of Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and
Libraries. EMMLAC’s role is both to ensure that libraries,
museums and archives (of all kinds and in all sectors) play
a full role in the social, educational, cultural and economic
life of the East Midlands, and also to raise the profile
of the MLA sector as a whole, both with users and with regional
and national government. This paper will explore the Regional
Agencies’ role in breaking down the barriers that continue
to exist, both for users and for staff, not only within
the library domain itself, but also between libraries, museums
and archives.
