Biography

I am currently the Systems Librarian at Cardiff University. As such I have overall responsibility for running the joint Voyager Library Management System for 18 Cardiff University and 20 Welsh NHS Trust libraries. Previously I worked for Geac Computers Ltd.; training customers on implementing and using the Geac ADVANCE and PLUS Library Management Systems. Before joining Geac I worked in South Africa at various institutions. First at one of the South African national libraries and then; as a librarian and an archivist, in the South African mining industry. In between stints in South Africa, I was for three years, an Engineering Subject Librarian at the Polytechnic of Wales.

Abstract

All you want - in AWHILES

Since the early 1990's there has been a successful on-going collaborative project to establish a joint Library Management System (LMS) between the medical academic libraries attached to Cardiff University and the Welsh NHS Trust Postgraduate Libraries. The project is run under the auspices of the All-Wales Health Information and Library Extension Services (AWHILES) organisation. A great effort has been made over the years to establish levels of co-operation and the sharing of resources between all the libraries in AWHILES, so that university medical and health-related students on placement receive an equitable experience, wherever they are based throughout Wales. There are now 18 Cardiff University and 20 NHS Trust Postgraduate Libraries on the joint Voyager LMS. The session will discuss the development of the joint project plus the problems and solutions that have arisen in managing a database that crosses academic and NHS library services.
