Biography

Arnie is Assistant Director of CSV, Community Service Volunteers, the UK's largest volunteering and training charity. CSV involves some 200,000 volunteers each year and employs over 800 staff.

As Director of CSV's consultancy service, which he started in 1999, Arnie has advised on and directly managed volunteering projects throughout the UK and overseas, many of them involving partnerships with local public service bodies and with national government Departments. He was responsible for developing the Lending Time projects, which successfully introduced more volunteers to new library services.

He lives and is based in London, which is also where he gets to do his own volunteering. .

Abstract

Half of the people in the UK are volunteers. 11 million more are waiting to be asked to get involved in their communities. Some libraries offer exciting and fun opportunities for volunteers, but what are the barriers stopping more from happening? Volunteers enhance library services and will increasingly do so in the future. This presentation explores both the potential and challenges of community engagement, from service delivery level to management, including a look at the added value volunteers already bring to other sectors and services.
