Biography      Mark Field Photo

Mark Field is the MP for Cities of London and Westminster.  He came into Parliament in 2001 and is currently the Shadow Minister for Culture, a role to which he was appointed in December 2005.  His responsibilities include the Arts, Heritage, Architecture and Design, Libraries, Museums and galleries, the Royal Estates, Regional Policy and Local Government as well as aspects of broadcasting and the National Lottery.

Abstract: The Conservative party perspective

Local councils run libraries.  The service in many parts of the country is in crisis with many library closures being announced following cutbacks in government grants.  Decisions are being made to reduce spending on books and other materials and I believe that a better vision and direction is needed from central government and its advisers for the service.  I hope to clarify that vision during my speech.
