Biography:
Educated at Glasgow Uni; Hons English Lit/Lang. Taught in FE/HE
Adult Ed; Elected to Council in 1992/ Served as VC of Womens' Commitee;
VC Arts and Culture then Convener Cultural and Leisure Services;
Lord Provost 2003--2007. Presently Chair Culture and Sport Glasgow,
VC Glasgow City Marketing Board.
Responsible
politically for City Hall and Kelvingrove refurbishments; As LP
commenced collaborative work with Edinburgh, promoted twinning with
Marseille and partnerships with other French cities, development
of the collaboration with Dalian and existing twins and progressed
aid work in Sri lanka, Pakistan andMalawi where Glasgow has established
two medical
units and education projects.
Awarded
doctorates by the city's three universities and Hon Fellowship of
the Royal college of physicians and surgeons. Honoured by the French
Govt
with the Order of Arts and Letters.
Recently appointed Visiting Professor at Caledonian University;
Chair of Scottish Ensemble Board; Member of large number of cultural
boards
ncluding Arches Theatre, NYCOS, Scottish Int Piano Comp and
Glasgow
Film Theatre and Aye Write Book Festival.
