The Campus/Healthy Living Centre

The Campus - The Campus is on the outskirts of Weston-super-Mare, and is a focal point for the new community of Locking Castle. The premises opened in 2004, and deliver a wide range of community services in partnership. Facilities include a 420 place primary school, a special school for 67 pupils with severe and profound learning difficulties, a hydrotherapy pool, conference and community meeting rooms, sports and leisure facilities including sports pitches, and a library.

For all Healthy Living Centre - The FAHLC is a third sector, social enterprise based in an area with high social and economic deprivation in Weston-super-Mare. Through local consultation a partnership of local residents and agencies came together to create a community building. They were able to attract a range of funding and the centre was opened three years ago. It uniquely encompasses a GP surgery, Community Hall and Café, a combined Anglican and Methodist Church, a Children's Centre, a local authority information point and library as well as meeting and training spaces.

An independent board consisting of six partner agencies and six local residents runs it. The initial library provision was developed through the on-site Surestart Children's Centre, and grew further with improvements to Council Information services during 2007. A successful BIG Lottery Community Libraries Fund bid by the partnership has enabled a purpose built library facility to be created within the previous external courtyard area of the building. Opened on 30 June 2009, local residents have been involved at all stages of the development.

As well as the officers responsible for these initiatives, it is anticipated that the following will be available at one or both sites - Graham Turner, Chief Executive, North Somerset Council, David Turner, Director, Development & Environment Directorate, Vivienne Thomson, Group Manager, Leisure & Libraries, Cllr Nigel Ashton, Leader of the Council and Cllr Felicity Baker, Executive member with responsibility for library services.
