South Lanarkshire logoSouth Lanarkshire Book Award 2004 Shortlist

This successful event is now in it’s sixth year with 10 secondary schools taking part. The Book Award aims to encourage teenagers to read for pleasure and to read more widely.

Books published in paperback in Britain between September 2002 and August 2003 were eligible for the long list; a panel of Schools Librarians, Area Librarians and the Literacy Development Co-ordinator discussed the titles to produce a shortlist of five. Pupils from S3 in each of the 10 schools will read all five books and will vote for their favourite book just prior to the date of the Award; the result will be kept a close secret until the Award ceremony on Monday 22nd March 2004.

On 22nd March the five shortlisted authors will be in South Lanarkshire; the authors will visit the schools in the morning and in the afternoon all the pupils involved will come together for the presentation which will be held in the village theatre in East Kilbride.
South Lanarkshire gratefully acknowledges the support of the publishers Oxford University Press, Hodder Children’s Books and The Chicken House.

The five shortlisted books for this year are:

  • Remembrance Theresa Breslin
  • Martyn Pig Kevin Brooks
  • Malarkey Keith Gray
  • Dead Negative Nick Manns
  • The Devil’s Toenail Sally Prue
