The things you can do with a library mobile!!!

The sun was shining brightly on Saturday, 19 July 2003, as Brian Taylor (mobile library driver), Amanda Gough (School and Community Librarian) and Wendy Molyneux (Service Development Officer) rolled up the ‘reading rug’ from the childrens area at Padgate Library and boarded the mobile van to join in the fun at the Westy Carnival.

This is a small community event with stalls, music and dancing organised by the people who live and work in the Westy area. The theme of the day was ‘Westy-by-the-Sea’ so the van was piled high with lots of beach books ready for the short storytelling sessions that were scheduled to be every hour. While Brian manned the inside of the mobile, joining new members and answering questions about the van routes, Amanda and Wendy sat outside and found they had unknowingly embarked on a continuous reading marathon that was to last the full day. Goody bags, colouring and activity sheets and balloons (on sticks donated by McDonalds) were given out as children and adults shared in the excitement and wonders to be found in the seaside tales. Some children sat and listened for maybe 1 or 2 stories, returning at intervals throughout the day. Other children sat for sometimes as long as an hour at a time hanging onto every word. Amanda and Wendy, sometimes taking turns to read to the children or sometimes reading simultaneously to or with smaller groups or individuals admitted to having very dry throats at the end of the day but felt on top of the world!

One of the highlights of the day was seeing the excitement and pleasure a young boy of about 8, who confessed he couldn’t read, got from joining in. Another was being asked by a small group of boys, who had at first seemed reluctant to take part, if we would be coming again next year. With moments like this, dry throats or not, the answer is very definitely ‘YES’!
