Although there have been many definitions of stress during recent years the most useful is from the Health and Safety Executive which describes it as "the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them".
Too much stress in the workplace can be problematic for employers because it lessens employees' effectiveness and leads to increased periods of absence.
