A non-exhaustive list of some of the potential benefits to individuals and their employers/ line manager of attending an IFLA conference.

Employers and Line Managers

· International activities can be used to improve the library’s image by raising the library’s profile within the organisation and outside, especially if you can identify solid achievements made by your staff as a result.

· Professional international activities are an opportunity to learn about the challenges facing LIS in other countries, many of which are very similar (sometimes the same) as the challenges faced in the UK. Comparing and contrasting information services in different countries can lead to a fresh look at existing policies and procedures, thereby encouraging innovation and positive change in home organisations.

· Conferences and study visits are staff development activities. Typically, participants gain new knowledge and skills which can be used to make contributions when they return. For example, participants post-conference reports could  include practical recommendations. Service levels can be raised and strengthened by drawing on knowledge transfer and new expertise.

Individuals

· Gaining professional knowledge, skills and experiences, especially if you become an active IFLA committee member.

· Chance to experience a new, international environment can be a useful professional development opportunity allowing you to bring back new ideas. For librarians who have only worked in one sector or country, an international conference or study visit can be a good way to learn more about how a libraries and information services in a different (or similar) circumstances operates.

· Continuing Professional Development in the widest sense –can help widen and deepen your thinking. Explaining your own systems and services to others helps you reflect on how and why you do things back home. Sharing your experiences on your return is another way to consider more deeply your experiences.

· Developing personal and professional relationships with LIS professionals around the world.

· Raise your profile in the workplace and the profession.

· The personal enrichment that comes from contact with another culture, meeting new people and discovering different ways of doing things.

· Enhance your promotion prospects!
