Workshop Programme

Major trends in libraries concern changing physical facility uses.  The challenges to provide digital workspace are changing how library buildings enable collections, user, and digital/print sharing and preservation services.

Aaron Cohen Associates has developed this one-day workshop to discuss library planning techniques and share best practice by visually reviewing spaces and measuring options.  The primary measures used during the workshop will help update architectural planning concerns including: collections, staff and user services.

09.30 Registration and refreshments

The Library as a dynamic environment
What techniques can we use to measure services for books,
periodicals, CD’s, etc to digital content needs? The session
will cover library planning, architectural issues, types of library
users and include examples of best practice.

10.10 Data gathering techniques

This session will review the techniques available to gather
information about library users and their particular needs –
and will go on to demonstrate how to use that information
in library space planning. The session will also introduce
architectural issues which can aid or hinder good library design
and will demonstrate how to make best use of buildings to
provide good spaces for the user.

11.15 Refreshment break

11.30 How this works in practice

Discussion will move from principle to practice, reviewing
examples of intelligent library design which meet customer
aspirations and provide libraries which are a pleasure to use.

12.30 Lunch

13.30 Visual Scan of Holborn Library

Delegates will tour the library and grade the spaces which
exist within the library. An “A” space, for instance, would
have natural lighting, comfortable seating and good acoustics.
Participants will be taught how to undertake a grading
exercise how to identify ways to transform a “D” space into
an “A” space with limited funding. Reorganisation techniques,
interior design and service planning will all be considered.

15.00 Return to CILIP, Ridgmount Street and refreshments

15.30 Discussion on the Visual Scan process with a focus on

improving spaces with limited funds.

16.30 Closing session on scheduling the pre-planning process

CILIP retains the right to change the programme and speakers to reflect the latest developments.
